ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team fell to the College of Saint Benedict Bennies on Friday evening in St. Cloud. St. Kate's 6-2 loss to Saint Ben's puts the team at 4-9-1 with a MIAC record of 2-5.
It was scoreless for the first 12 minutes of play before the Bennies added their first of the game with eight minutes to play in the opening frame.
Rookie
Michelle Smith tallied her first collegiate goal unassisted just a minute later to tie it at 1-1. Smith went on to put the Wildcats' ahead with under three to play in the first period off a pass from
Samantha Bogen and
Paige Loidolt. The Bennies answered though scoring in under a 30 second left on the clock to tie it again 2-2.
Out of the first intermission the Wildcats started strong again until the eighth minute and the Bennies scored their first of four in the period while playing four on four. They went on to score again at 10:37 before taking advantage of the power play with five to play in the period. They scored their final goal of the game with just over two minutes left.
St. Kate's held the Bennies off for the balance of the game with junior
Anna Friendshuh entering the game and making four saves. Rookie
Addie Oettinger appeared in net for the first 40 minutes making 25 saves to claim the loss.
Game two of the MIAC series is Saturday, January 18 at Drake Arena in St. Paul with puck drop scheduled for 2 pm.
