Softball closes out regular season with split with Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University softball team was finally able to finish the conference doubleheader against Hamline following a halted game one due to weather Friday with a score of 7-7 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Game one came to a conclusion Saturday with the Pipers edging out the Wildcats in 9-8 in 10 innings. St. Kate's turned it around in game two picking up the win at 6-4.

GAME ONE | Hamline 9, St. Catherine 8 (10 innings)
St. Kate's was off to a great start taking a seven run lead over the Pipers in the bottom of the third inning. The game was then paused due to unplayable field conditions as the result of rain resuming nearly an hour later. The game commenced in the top of the fourth with the Pipers able to add three runs on the Wildcats before knotting it up at 7-7 in the top of the fifth with a two run homer. With lightning in St. Paul, the game halted in the bottom of the eighth being forced to resume Saturday due to lack of daylight. Both teams added runs in the ninth inning forcing a tenth inning. The Pipers were successful in adding a run with the international run rule in place and holding off the Wildcats to claim the win.

GAME TWO | St. Catherine 6, Hamline 4
The Pipers picked up where they left off in game one adding two runs right away in the opening frame with St. Kate's adding their first run as senior Taylor Brunn crossed home plate. St. Kate's tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the third and tied it again at 3-3 after both teams added runs in the fourth. The conference foes repeated one run at-bats in the fifth with St. Kate's claiming the win in the bottom of the sixth with Sarah Posey driving in the final two runs off a double to center field bringing in Julia Azure and Sam Aronson

The Wildcats clinched their spot in the MIAC playoffs which begin with a first round game Thursday, May 11. St. Kate's will travel to either Gustavus or St. Olaf Thursday pending the results of the Saint Mary's vs Saint Benedict contest scheduled for Sunday, May 7.
