Wildcats win dual over UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The St. Catherine University swimming and diving team claimed a dual victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday by a score of 165 to 129 in the first competition of 2023. 

The meet opened with the 200-yard medley relay as St. Kate's A team of Annie Voss, Jordyn Wentzel, Emma Svendsen, and Ella Hochstetler finished with the top time of 1:51.03. 

St. Kate's finished second and third in the 1000-yard freestyle with junior Sammi Friedrich as the runner-up with a time of 11:17.24 followed by first-year Olivia Weil with a third place time of 11:17.79. 
 
Voss was the top finisher in the 200-yard freestyle coming in at 1:59.69 with junior Anneke van Oosterom in second with a time of 2:01.79. 

Hochstetler made an instant impact in her first appearance as a Wildcat claiming first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.41 Gillian Durand was fourth in the event with a time of 1:02.75 and rookie Natalie Chandler finished fifth at 1:04.14. 

In Wentzel's first individual event of the day, she was first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.27 while Grimm was third in the event at 1:11.45. Svendsen followed it up with her first individual event coming in first in the 200-yard butterfly with a finish of 2:10.59. In third was J Dombroski with a time of 2:21.38 and Abigail Forsmark was fourth in the event at 2:23.78. 

Wentzel was also first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.38 as Freidrich was fifth at 27.25. 

Hochstetler was first in the 100-yard freestyle clocking in at 55.64 and van Oosterom was just behind as the runner-up at 55.76. 

Voss and Durand were the top-two finishers in the 200-yard backstroke with Voss coming in at 2:09.14 while Durand's time was 2:13.36. 

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Olivia Weil was second overall with a finish of 2:31.96 as Grimm was fourth at 2:34.07. 

Svendsen registered the top finish in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:19.99 and senior Andrea Voelker was third with a time of 5:28.50. Freidrich was right behind Voelker in fourth with a time of 5:28.72. 

Wentzel was first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.37 as Dombroski was second in the event touching the wall in 1:02.47. Dombroski went on to claim first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.61 and Weil finished third at 2:21.49. 

In the final event of the meet, the Wildcats finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay led by van Oosterom coming in at 3:41.05 with Hochstetler, Svendsen, and Voss rounding out the A team. The relay team of Durand, Freidrich, Chandler and Mia Hocking were third overall with a time of 3:52.70.
