Volleyball falls in five set thriller with No. 13 UW-Stevens Point

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University volleyball team put on a show at Butler Center on Wednesday evening dropping a five-set thriller to the No. 13 ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Wildcats are now 10-4 on the season as they closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule.

Lexie Petrick recorded her second double-double of the season with eleven kills and 13 digs while also collecting three service aces. Claire Segner had a team-high 17 digs as setter Haley Smith also recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 14 digs.

"UWSP is a good team", said head coach Todd Nelson. "While I'm disappointed we didn't get the win tonight, I am proud of our efforts. When we execute at a high level we are very, very good and I am encouraged by that."

The Wildcats took set one thanks to a five-point run late to take a 21-18 lead. The Pointers knotted the game up at 23-23 before Petrick and Smith combined to take the lead and Lauren Skar and Emily Bredman secured the set point blocking the Pointers efforts.

St. Kate's dominated in set two holding the lead before Stevens Point tied the set at 17's. Both teams battled for the lead with St. Kate's coming out on top again credit to Petrick at the service line.

The Pointers took the third set with a strong 7-3 start early but not before St. Kate's took the lead again at 8-7. Both squads went back and forth until the Pointers went on a six-point run for their first set win of the match. The final two sets were each in favor of Stevens Point as they were able to catch the Wildcats off-guard winning 25-18 and 15-7, respectively.

St. Catherine has a pair of conference matches to close out the week hosting Concordia College on Friday at Butler Center at 7 pm before heading to Winona to face Saint Mary's University at 5 pm.
