Wildcats advance to MIAC Championship with shootout win over Saint Benedict

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University soccer team is headed back to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff Championship game with a shootout win over the College of Saint Benedict Bennies on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats advance to play the the No. 1 seed, Carleton College on Saturday at 1 pm in Northfield. 

The Bennies struck first in the 59th minute taking a one goal lead. The Wildcats knotted the game up with a late goal from fifth-year Lauren Witte assisted by Kallie Tuominen in the 85th minute and forcing overtime. 

Neither team was able to score in the 20 minutes of overtime to force a shootout to determine who will advance to the championship final. 

The Wildcats were first in the shootout with senior Emily Hinze missing right. The Bennies scored in their first attempt to go up by one. Tuominen was up next for St. Kate's with Saint Ben's making the save and the Bennies scoring to take a 2-0 lead with three attempts remaining. 

Fifth-year Sofia Campbell scored the Wildcats first goal in the shootout followed by goalkeeper Kate Praetz first save. Praetz was the fourth Wildcat in the shootout scoring and then making a save to tie the contest at 2-2. Sophomore Syd Nelson was the next up for St. Kate's missing her attempt. The Bennies would go on to miss their next two shots with junior Ari Green putting the Wildcats up by one to win the contest.

Praetz led the charge for St. Kate's making eleven saves in regulation. Witte added two shots on goal while sophomore Kendra Lingman added the team's third shot.
