Wildcats down #14 Augsburg with shootout victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team remains undefeated after claiming a shootout win over the No. 14 Augsburg University Auggies at Drake Arena on Friday evening. The shootout win was the team's first defeat of the Auggies since November 22, 2013.

The first 20 minutes were scoreless on both ends of the ice with fifth-year goalie Elizabeth Kubicek making 13 saves in the period.

Augsburg registered the first goal of the game three minutes into the second scoring while on the power play.

Senior Laura Denchfield scored with four minutes left in the period with an assist from senior Marie Reimer. Reimer went on to give the Wildcats the lead scoring a power play goal with an assist from Denchfield with less than a minute to go in the second.

The Auggies knotted the game at 2-2 with under ten minutes remaining in the conference opener. The Auggies continued to pressure Kubicek firing off six shots on goal in under 3 minutes before giving St. Kate's the power play opportunity with under a minute to play. St. Kate's was unable to capitalize on the player advantage forcing the team's first overtime of the season.

The overtime was played as a four on three format for the first minute while the penalty expired before going to a three on three for the last four minutes. The Auggies tallied six shots to St. Kate's three with neither team able to score to go to a best of three shootout.

Augsburg was up first with Kubicek making the save. Rookie Paige Loidolt was the first up for St. Kate's finding the back of the net to go up 1-0. Kubicek saved the Auggies second attempt giving St. Kate's the opportunity to claim the win on the next shot. Senior Kaitlyn Blair was successful at sealing the shootout win.

Denchfield had six shots on goal in the game followed by Reimer with four. Kubicek finished the game with 37 saves.

The Wildcats travel to Minneapolis on Saturday for game two of the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 pm at Ed Saugestad Rink.
