Volleyball takes down St. Scholastica 3-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over visiting College of St. Scholastica Saints on Friday. St. Kate's improves to 14-7 with a MIAC record of 5-3.

Three players tallied double-digit kills in the four-set match led by junior Maggie Rosen with eleven followed by senior Lauren Skar and rookie Madison Fagan who each had ten. Sophomore Lexie Petrick was just one kill shy of double figures in combination with her team-high 17 digs and four aces.

"We knew tonight was going to be a battle", commented head coach Todd Nelson. "St Scholastica makes you earn every point, and we fought hard to earn tonight's win. I was really proud of our mature and gritty effort tonight."

The Wildcats had control over the Saints in the first set getting out to an early 6-1 lead before holding an eleven-point cushion at 22-11. St. Scholastica rallied back going on a six-point run but the St. Kate's was able to put a stamp on the set with a score of 25-19.

The second set was a battle on both sides of the net trading points until St. Kate's scored five unanswered points for a 21-16 lead. The Saints tried to inch their way back but couldn't get past the Wildcats' front row giving St. Kate's their second set win.

In the third, the Wildcats were up 19-13 when the Saints fought back forcing the Wildcats to make four back-to-back errors to win the set 26-24. St. Scholastica carried their momentum into the fourth but could not slow St. Kate's down at the end of the set as the Wildcats claimed the match victory by a score of 25-19.

St. Kate's will face Augsburg University on Saturday traveling across the Mississippi River to Minneapolis for a 5 pm match. The team will close out the regular season at home on Wednesday as they are set to host the College of Saint Benedict at 7 pm for Senior Day.
