Wildcats rebound, sweep Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Kate's softball won both contests against the Hamline Pipers Sunday, bringing the Wildcats to 19-11 with two games left in the regular season. Senior pitcher Kathryn Proper recorded two wins and the Wildcats won 9-1 and 10-6.

Game 1: St. Catherine 9, Hamline 1 (5 innings)

The Wildcat bats were hot after not scoring a run against the Oles Saturday, with the lineup combining for 8 RBIs, led by two apiece from senior Mikayla Grant and junior Julia Azure. Sophomore Alyssa Montero was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate, and the Wildcats only struck out once, drawing four walks against the Pipers. Sophomore Taylor Brunn had an impressive diving catch in center field to go along with a 4 for 8 day at the plate. Proper did not allow an earned run, and tallied five strikeouts with no walks and only two hits allowed.

Game 2: St. Catherine 10, Hamline 6

Proper was back in the circle to start game two, capping an impressive weekend with two strikeouts, no walks, and one hit allowed in two innings. The Wildcats scored five unanswered runs before the Pipers got four runs across in the fourth inning. St. Kate's responded with five more runs in the sixth inning, courtesy of RBIs from Azure, Montero, junior Jasmine Ziegler, and junior Angela Huepfel, who had a two-run double and a total of four RBIs in the game. Montero recorded two strikeouts in two innings in the circle, and junior Annabelle Schutte secured the save after three innings of work.

St. Catherine is back in action Tuesday at home against Macalester, with games at 3:30 and 5:30 pm to close out the regular season. The Wildcats have earned a berth to the MIAC Playoffs and are currently holding down the No. 5 seed in the conference.
