ST. PAUL, Minn. The St. Catherine softball team swept the Macalester Scots in their final home doubleheader of the season, with both games lasting five innings.
Game 1: St. Catherine 13, Macalester 5
Senior Kathryn Proper got her third straight win in the circle and improved her record to 10-6. Proper had a lot of run support courtesy of two three-run home runs off the bat of junior Angela Huepfel, who set the new single-season home run record with 12 on the year. The Scots took a 5-3 lead in the top of the second, but the Wildcats answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. Senior MiKayla Grant was a perfect two for two at the plate, and the Wildcats drew five walks as a team while striking out only once.
Game 2: St. Catherine 12, Macalester 4
The Scots struck first in game two of the doubleheader, but again the Wildcats responded immediately with sophomore Alyssa Montero doubling in junior Alex Ehde to knot the score up at one. Grant homered in the second to kick off a six-run inning. The Wildcats took advantage of 12 walks by Macalester pitchers, including three with the bases loaded. Junior Annabelle Schutte pitched the complete game, recording six strikeouts and two walks. Schutte also had two RBIs at the plate. Montero had two RBIs of her own and was inches away from a home run, with the ball bouncing off the top of the fence. Schutte finishes the regular season with a 7-4 record in the circle.
The Wildcats clinched the No. 5 seed and will play next Thursday at 4:30, with their opponent to be determined.
