ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine softball team secured their third doubleheader sweep in a row, beating visiting Gustavus Adolphus College to improve their record to 12-6 overall, and 7-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The Wildcats maintained control for most of the two games, leading from wire-to-wire behind solid defense and consistent hitting.
GAME ONE | St. Catherine 6, Gustavus 5
The Wildcats wasted no time getting the scoring going, with junior Lindsay Burr doubling junior Angela Huepfel home in the bottom of the first inning. Fellow junior Annabelle Schutte added another RBI double the very next inning, bringing in sophomore Alyssa Montero. Huepfel and junior Alex Ehde both hit home runs, and the Wildcats had a four-run lead heading into the seventh. Starting pitcher Schutte struck out four and earned her fourth win of the season. Senior Kathryn Proper closed out the game, retiring the last two batters to secure the save.
GAME TWO | St. Catherine 4, Gustavus 1
Proper was back in the circle to start game two, allowing just one run in seven innings and tallying five strikeouts. The Wildcats scored first again, and again it was Burr with the RBI, scoring sophomore Taylor Brunn. St. Kate's capitalized on Gustie errors while committing none of their own, never allowing Gustavus to rally.
The Wildcats are tied for second in the conference with Bethel, trailing first-place St. Olaf by two games. St. Kate's will play two doubleheaders this weekend, traveling to Carleton Saturday, then hosting St. Mary's Sunday for senior day. Games will be at 1 and 3 pm both days.
