Wildcats edge out Huskies 5-4 in season opener

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- St. Catherine University tennis returned to competition Friday evening at Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Wildcats edged out Division II opponent St. Cloud State University 5-4 for the program's first win over the Huskies. 

"It was great to be back out on the court competing again", said head coach Megan Gunderson. "The team worked hard and it was a good way to start off the season."

The Wildcats collected wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches while falling in No. 2 spot. On court one, Kelsey Dorr and Bri Dorr defeated the Huskies No. 1 doubles team with a score of 8-6. At No. 2, Ella Graham and Reilee Schepper fell to Olivia Fredrickson and Shanna Kinny 8-6. In the final doubles match, first-years Noelle Slezak and Erica Wing tallied their first collegiate doubles win 8-4. 

In singles, K. Dorr earned the win by default at the No. 1 spot having topped her opponent 6-1 in the first set. At No. 2, B. Dorr, defeated the Huskies player 6-4, 6-1. Graham faced her doubles opponent, Kinny, in the No. 3 match falling 6-4, 6-3, while Schepper was defeated at No. 4 7-5, 6-0. Sophomore Elsa Joly played a tough match taking the first set at No. 5 6-2 but ultimately fell in sets two and three, 7-6, 10-6, respectively. The final point of the match was earned at No. 6 with Slezak making her singles debut taking win 6-2, 6-3. 

St. Kate's opens the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) competition Sunday vs. Concordia College at 1:15 pm. The match will be played at the Bloomington Lifetime Fitness and does not allow spectators.
