ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- The Wildcat softball team (5-3) put on a hitting clinic in their doubleheader Friday night, outscoring the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (3-15) 19-2.
GAME 1, St. Catherine 11, Northwestern 2
Sophomore Shannon Leahy (Stillwater, Minn. / Hill Murray) started the scoring off in game one with an RBI single in the top of the third, and junior Alex Ehde (Stillwater, Minn.) brought Leahy around to put St. Kate's up 2-0. The Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the tie didn't last long, with sophomore Alyssa Montero (Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) putting the Wildcats up for good with a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Juniors Angela Huepfel (Hudson, Wis.) and Lindsay Burr (Baldwin, Wis./ Baldwin-Woodville) each hit two-run home runs of their own, and St. Kate's run-ruled UNW in six innings. Sophomore Taylor Brunn (Little Canada, Minn. / Concordia Academy / UM-Crookston) went a perfect 4-4 at the plate, and senior Kathryn Proper (St. Paul, Minn. / Como Park) got the win in the circle, allowing two runs in four innings.
GAME 2, St. Catherine 8, Northwestern 0
Sophomore Alyssa Montero took the circle for game two, and the Wildcats picked up right where they left off at the plate. Junior Angela Huepfel continued her hot streak with RBI doubles in the first and third innings. St. Kate's broke it open in the fourth, with an RBI double from junior Jasmine Ziegler (Prior Lake, Minn.) and a three-run homer from Montero. Sophomore Britney Meier (Winona, Minn. / Cotter) capped the scoring off with a solo home run in the fifth, and the Wildcats secured another run-rule win. Montero and sophomore Leah Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn. / St. Mary's) pitched a scoreless outing, allowing only five hits and striking out five with no walks between them.
With the two wins, the Wildcats are now 5-3 on the season. They head to Iowa on March 29 to face the University of Dubuque in a doubleheader.
