ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Wildcats played a good game against a strong opponent on Saturday, but ended up losing to Gustavus, and so fell to 3-3 in the MIAC (3-4 overall). Both teams shot the ball well (St Kates shot 49% from the field, Gustavus 47%), but the Gusties dominated the glass, outrebounding the Wildcats 34-15.
The lead changed hands a few times in the first quarter, but the Gusties closed it out with a 6-2 run to go up by six. The second quarter saw the Gusties push their lead to double-digits with five minutes remaining in the half. After the teams traded some baskets, the Wildcats scored seven unanswered points in the final two minutes to cut the deficit to three.
The Wildcats came out energized in the third, forcing a couple of turnovers and going on a 7-0 run that gave them a 4-point lead. They stayed in front until there were six minutes left in the third, when Gustavus hit a three to recapture the lead. The Gusties then scored the next 11 points to go up by a dozen.
Still the Wildcats continued to compete in the final quarter. They quickly cut the deficit to single digits, and were down by only seven for much of the fourth quarter. But when Gustavus hit a pair of free throws with under two minutes left to go up by ten, the outcome seemed set.
Bree Glynn led the Wildcats in both points (12) and rebounds (4), going an efficient 6-10 from the floor.
Katie Benjamin had 11 points and 3 boards.
The Wildcats next game is at Augsburg on Wednesday, January 5 at 7 pm.
