ST. PAUL, Minn. -- With accurate shooting and strong rebounding, the Macalester Scots defeated the Wildcats 68-59 on Monday in a matchup of two teams in the middle of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). As a result, both teams are now 4-5 in the conference.
St Kate's got off to a strong start and went up by six points with just under seven minutes left in the first quarter. But the Scots kept it close throughout the first half, and only trailed by one at the break.
Macalester came out on fire in the third quarter: they went on an 18-5 run and built a 12-point lead with about a minute and a half left in the quarter. Still, when
Kylie Wood hit a three to cut the deficit to 7 as the buzzer sounded, hope was renewed for the home crowd in the
Butler Center. In the fourth, the Wildcats got the deficit down to two points, and with six and a half minutes left it was just a one-possession game. Alas, Mac went on a 7-2 run, and the game was put beyond reach.
Kylie Wood led Wildcat scorers with 14 points (2-for-3 from outside the arc), while
Sam Orth had 9 points.Â
Bree Glynn chipped in 8 points and had 4 rebounds, while
Karis Zezza had 7 points and 3 boards. The Scots shot 49% from the field, put in seven 3-pointers, and outrebounded the Wildcats 31-25. The Wildcats forced 24 turnovers (scoring 25 points off of those), and their bench outscored the Scots' bench 20-3, but it was not enough.
The Wildcat's next game is in Winona on Wednesday, January 12 against Saint Mary's at 7 pm.
