Wildcats open MIAC season with 9-0 victory over Cobbers

FARGO, N.D. - St. Catherine tennis kicked off the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season with a 9-0 victory over the Concordia College Cobbers. The Wildcats (3-0, 1-0 MIAC) downed the Cobbers (2-4, 0-3 MIAC) on Sunday afternoon handing them their third MIAC loss so far this season. 

Kelsey Dorr improved her No. 1 singles record to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Cobbers undefeated No. 1 Raquel Egge. Fellow first-year Sofia Walker maintained her perfect No. 2 singles record defeating Jenna Forknell. Walker dropped her first set with a score of 6-4 before taking set two 6-2. In the tie breaker set, Walker was able to squeeze out a 10-8 set win for the overall match victory. Bri Dorr 's first set ended, 6-1, in favor of the senior, while Alisha Wiedmeier finished her first set with a 6-1 win. Dorr and Wiedmeier both claimed match victories after winning their second set with a score of 6-2 and 6-4, respectively. 

Maddy Knoll earned the No. 5 singles point for the Wildcats behind her 6-0, 6-0 victory. Ella Graham followed quickly behind with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her own. "Today was a good day to open up conference play against some good competition, said Knoll. "We came out strong and got the job done. It was a true team effort!" 

St. Kate's  earned the sweep in doubles play, defeating Concordia in all three matches.Kelsey and Bri Dorr struck first, earning the 8-6 win over the Cobbers Egge and Forknell.  Wiedmeier and Knoll followed suit, winning a 8-1 decision to clinch the doubles point. Walker and senior Aubrey Eckstrom worked an 8-2 4 victory to close out doubles play.

The Wildcats are back in action next Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota against the University of St. Thomas (6-1, 3-1 MIAC) at 11 am.
