MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The St. Catherine University Wildcat (4-0, 2-0 MIAC) tennis team upset the University of St. Thomas Tommies (6-3, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon at Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Wildcats shined on Saturday edging out the Tommies 7-2 claiming the conference victory for the first time since April 19, 2013, defeating St. Thomas 6-3. St. Kate's remains undefeated this season overall and in conference play with Carleton on deck next weekend.
The action began in the conference matching on the doubles court with the Wildcats claiming victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 pairings.
Bri Dorr and
Kelsey Dorr fell in the No. 1 pairing 8-4 for their first doubles loss of the season.
Alisha Wiedmeier and
Maddy Knoll defeated the Tommies in the No. 2 doubles position with a set score of 8-1 and Ella Grahman and
Sofia Walker downed their No. 3 pairing 8-2 giving St. Kate's the 2-1 lead headed into singles play.
B. Dorr and Graham gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead after finishing clinching victories in the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively. Dorr defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1, while Graham came out on top with set scores of 6-1, 6-0.
Walker sealed the victory in the No. 2 position defeating the Tommies 6-2, 6-2. Just behind Walker was Knoll playing in the No. 5 match with set scores of 6-2, 7-5, and
Alisha Wiedmeier in the No. 4 singles match winning the first set 6-3 and dropping set two 6-4, Wiedmeier won the tiebreaker set with a score of 11-9 to advance St. Catherine to 7-1. "We knew from the beginning that we wanted to make history today", said Wiedmeier. "Every single Wildcat came out and left it all on the court. Today was a good day for us!"
K. Dorr played an exciting match but ultimately fell in the No. 1 singles match in the tiebreaker set. She took the first set over the Tommies 6-1, dropping set two with a score of 6-2 and also the tiebreaker 11-9.
St. Kate's will face defending conference champion, Carleton College (1-0, 0-0 MIAC) on March 7 at 1 pm at Lifetime Fitness in Bloomington, Minnesota.
