Hockey claims the series sweep over St. Olaf on Saturday

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Catherine hockey claimed their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) sweep of the season with the 3-1 victory over St. Olaf College on Saturday afternoon in Northfield. Riding on a three-game win streak, St. Catherine is 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the MIAC sitting in fifth place still.

First-year Laura Denchfield added two more points to her weekend total of four on Saturday netting the Wildcats' first and third goal in the game. Denchfield put St. Catherine on the scoreboard first netting her 11th goal this season 28 seconds into the second period. The powerplay goal was assisted by sophomore Sophia Gorski for the 13th assist of her second year in the purple and gold. 

Junior Emilee Anderson netted her first goal since December 7 against St. Ben's at 4:23 in the second period. Anderson had help from senior Lexi Muller on her eighth goal this season giving the Wildcats' a 2-0 lead over the Oles. 

With just under five minutes to play in the third period, the Oles found the back of the net for their lone goal of the game cutting the lead in half. Denchfield scored her second goal and the Wildcats' third with just one minute remaining with an assist from Anderson. 

Sophomore Elizabeth Kubicek earned her third straight win facing 24 shots in the complete game. The Wildcats' starter is 4-4 this season with eight games remaining in the regular season. 

Denchfield is now tied for the top spot in the MIAC with Hamline senior Bre Simon both with 12 goals. Anderson is tied in the No. 6 spot with eight goals this season and fifth in points this season with 17. 

St. Catherine is in Mendota Heights next Friday, January 31 for a 7 pm game against St. Thomas. The Wildcats and Tommies will faceoff for the second game of the MIAC series at Drake Arena on Saturday, February 1 at 2 pm.
