ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Catherine basketballs win streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon falling to the University of St. Thomas 67-49 at Schoenecker Arena. The 8-9 Wildcats have eight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contests remaining on the regular-season schedule with a conference record of 5-7 and currently tied for seventh with St. Olaf.
St. Catherine led the No. 18 St. Thomas through the first four minutes of the game taking an early 4-0 lead. Things shifted quickly though with the Tommies holding St. Catherine to just four more points in the first quarter to their 22. Sophomore
Katie Benjamin added five points in the first ten minutes as senior
Danica Cambrice added the other three for St. Catherine. The Tommies continued their scoring run in the second quarter over St. Catherine taking a commanding lead of 39-19 after 20 minutes. Benjamin added another four points for the purple and gold in the second quarter with help from rookie
Bree Glynn scoring three.
The second half of the conference game was much stronger for the Wildcats led by rookie
Cierra Ahlf going 4 for 5 in the third quarter for nine points. The Wildcats' outscored the Tommies in third adding 17 to the Tommies 12 to cut the lead to 15 with ten minutes to play.Ahlf added three more points in the final period for a game total of 12, the team's second-best in the points column.
Benjamin added four of the Wildcats final 13 points in the closing quarter for a game total and team-best 15 points plus finishing with two steals, two rebounds, and one assist. Cambrice added ten points in the game with eight assists, two steals, and one rebound. As a team, St. Catherine shot 71.4 % from the free-throw line led by Cambrice going 4 for 6.
St. Catherine is on the road again on Wednesday heading to Arden Hills, Minnesota for a7 pm midweek MIAC game at undefeated Bethel University. The Royals defeated the Wildcats 69-50 on December 11 at
Butler Center.
