Obert leads Wildcat tennis in conference opener against St. Thomas

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - St. Catherine University senior tennis player Leah Obert led the Wildcats in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season opener against the University of St. Thomas Tommies. The Tommies topped the Wildcats 8-1 with Obert winning in the No. 5 singles match in three sets. The senior defeated her opponent 6-2, 2-6, 10-2. 

After the match, Obert said, "St. Thomas has always been a tough team to compete against. Our team put up a great fight and continued to battle throughout the whole match." 

The balance of the singles round points when to the Tommies with junior Bri Dorr in the No. 1 spot falling 1-6 in both sets. Junior Alisha Weidmeier had a great match winning her first set but dropping the second two in the No. 2 spot 6-4, 3-6, 8-10. 

Junior Aubrey Eckstrom played in the No. 3 singles position falling 0-6, 4-6, junior Maddy Knoll was defeated by the Tommies in the No. 4 spot 4-6, 2-6, and senior Ruth Rike was the No. 6 singles player falling 1-6, 4-6. 

St. Thomas swept the doubles competition with Dorr and Eckstrom playing No. 1 falling in a close 6-8 match. First-year Reilee Schepper played in the No. 2 spot with Knoll going 2-8 in their match and sophomore Ella Graham playing with Weidmeier in No. 3 falling 0-8. 

The Wildcats return to Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday, February 24 at 4 p.m. for a MIAC dual versus Macalester College.
