Denchfield, Gorski lead Wildcats to 3-2 victory over Saint Ben's

First-year Laura Denchfield had her second straight two-goal game

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Catherine hockey team grabbed their second straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over the College of Saint Benedict Bennies. The Wildcats are overall 5-3 so far this season with a MIAC record of 2-3. 

Rookie forward Laura Denchfield wasted no time getting the Wildcats first goal finding the back of the net in just nine seconds with help from sophomore Sophia Gorski winning the opening draw. Gorski tipped in the second goal at 2:33 in the first period on the power play assisted by senior Lexi Muller and junior Veronica Gruett

Saint Benedict cut the lead at 7:34 in the first period to close out the first twenty minutes 2-1 St. Catherine. 

Denchfield opened the second period similar to the first with a power play goal 50 seconds into play with help from rookie Kaitlyn Blair. Denchfield goal was her second straight game-winner of the season and her fifth goal overall. 

The Bennies scored one last time near the with 15 minutes left in the second period while on the power play cut the lead to just one. 

The Wildcats won the shot count 43-23 over the Bennies led by Denchfield with ten and junior Emilee Anderson with nine. Blair and rookie Marie Reimer both added five shots apiece with the first-year and sophomore class responsible for 28 of the Wildcats shots. "We hope this was a turning point for our young team. They played at a complete game and really focused in the defensive end", said head coach Brad Marshall

The Wildcats' defense along with junior goalie Bryce Boreen held the Bennies to just two goals and 23 shots total. Boreen made 21 saves in the game-clinching the win and improving her record this season to 4-1. 

"It's nice to get some power play goals and everyone buying into what we work on during the week", said Marshall. St. Catherine was able to take advantage of the man advantage on Saturday adding two power play goals in the win adding to their season total of five. 

Game two of the series with Saint Benedict is Sunday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at Dave Torrey Arena in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
