SUPERIOR, Wis. - St. Catherine came up short falling 3-2 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets on Friday evening at Wessman Arena.
The Wildcats picked up a power-play goal from
Sophia Gorski in the first seven minutes of the game to open the night over the talented 'Jackets. St. Catherine rookie
Laura Denchfield scored the final goal of the evening late in the third period as Superior scored three goals in between.
With help from senior
Lexi Muller and junior
Emilee Anderson, Gorski scored her fifth goal with the player advantage as the result of a hooking penalty on Superior.
The Yellowjackets scored the tying goal at 16:48 in the second period and their other two goals in the third taking the 3-1 lead with 3:39 to play.
Denchfield brought St. Catherine within a goal at 18:56 in the third period scoring her sixth this season. Her late game effort was assisted from first-year
Marie Reimer with her fifth assist in her debut season in purple and gold.
The Wildcats special teams were 1 for 6 on the power play and 2-0 on the penalty kill as St. Catherine lost the shot count on Friday. Sophomore
Elizabeth Kubicek was in net falling to 1-1 this season for the Wildcats making 39 saves on 42 shots on the night.
Game two of the non-conference series is Saturday, December 14 at 2 pm at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
