Wildcats finish season with 3-2 OT loss in MIAC Playoffs

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Catherine University soccer team concluded the 2019 season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Bethel University Royals on Tuesday afternoon in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff Quarterfinal game. The Wildcats finish the season with an overall record of 12-7  and 8-3 in the MIAC, both of which are program-bests.

The No. 6 seed Royals scored first netting a penalty kick goal at the 17 minute mark. The Wildcats were given the same opportunity two minutes later with sophomore Taylor Johnson knotting the game at 1-1. Johnson finished her second year in the purple and gold with seven goals ranking third on the team.

Coming out of halftime, St. Catherine trailed Bethel 2-1 with the Royals scoring at 41:38 in the first half. Sophomore Sofia Campbell tied the game heading the ball off a T. Johnson corner-kick.

The Wildcats had 13 shots in the second half but were unable to finish with credit to Bethel's goalkeeper putting up an impressive performance. Bethel ultimately scored the game winner in the first few minutes of overtime to advance to MIAC Playoff semifinal.

First-year Mandy Elton led the charge tallying six shots and three on goal followed by senior Allie Bird with four total shots also with three on goal. Senior Maddie Conners recorded three shots, all on goal followed by seniors Marissa Janssen and Amanda Carey and sophomore Lauren Witte all with two shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Tayler Koop made seven saves in the conference playoff allowing three goals, one of which was a penalty kick effort.
