Underclassmen highlight Fleur-de-lis Awards

ST. PAUL, Minn. – This week's Fleur-de-lis honorees each have gone above and to stand out in athletics and leadership living up to the definition of the award in its entirety. Five student-athletes representing four different teams were selected as Fleur-de-lis honorees representing basketball, golf, softball, and swim & dive.

This selection period highlights the past two weeks with outstanding athletic performance, leadership, and scholarship. Introduced in the fall of 2017, the Fleur-de-lis award is an honor given to student-athletes who embody the three components of the Wildcat athletic department; sport, scholarship, and service.

The fleur-de-lis is a visual representation of the athletic department's mission. The three petals of the fleur-de-lis represent the tenants of our mission:  Scholarship, Athleticism, and Service.  The band holding the three pedals together represents leadership and perseverance.  Excellence in any of these areas is recognized by the department through this award.

The Fleur-de-lis award honors Wildcat student-athletes who have exemplified the department's mission on the field, the classroom and through community service. The fleur-de-lis, or "flower of the lily" in English, is a symbol used by the University and Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and is proudly incorporated into St. Catherine's shield as a representation of the Sister's French heritage and the seed from which their good works grow.

Clara Godoy-Henderson | So., Golf | Leadership and Service
Sophomore golfer Clara Godoy-Henderson has had a busy fall despite being injured and unable to compete on the course. Suffering a stress fracture in her back over the summer, Godoy-Henderson wasted no-time finding other ways to contribute to her team and the university as a whole. She dedicates her limited time to several different clubs and initiatives that are happening around campus.

This fall, she was selected as the Celeste Dream intern, which is a social justice position connecting the Sisters of St. Joseph and the St. Catherine community. She is primarily focused on the St. Kate's food shelf and heads several sustainability initiatives around campus. As part of her work with the food shelf, Godoy-Henderson is constantly fundraising and applying for grants to sustain the center and help students in need. She recently hosted a Friendsgiving meal for over 100 students on campus providing a free hot meal to students with help from several clubs and athletic teams. As part of the internship, she also presents weekly to different groups on campus to educate individuals with food insecurities.

As a leader on campus focused on the entire university's sustainability efforts, Godoy-Henderson has organized tours of other conference schools and provides guidance for clubs and individuals who are seeking to improve their current practices. In just her second year at St. Catherine, she is already the co-president of the NEXSS Club (Nutrition and Exercise/ Sport Science) and is currently bagging and selling organic herbal tea from the St. Catherine community gardens to fundraise for the Exercise in Medicine initiative.  Lastly, she is the treasurer of the Food Justice Coalition working closely with the community gardens and submitted a proposal to campus dining to grow food in the community garden for students to purchase on campus. She has also been working towards getting a greenhouse approved for campus to provide more opportunity for the community gardens.

Aside from all of her responsibilities outside of athletics, she still found the time to be supportive of her team. She played a vital role in running the Wildcats home tournament in the fall, has helped with hosting recruits and also organizing team events in the off-season.

Menso also appeared in the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relay events helping the Wildcats achieve the top-spot in both while also participating on the St. Catherine relay team that placed third in the 200-freestyle relay. After a successful first-year campaign, Menso has been working hard to build off of last year. In acceptance of the award, Menso said, "The team has been working very hard and it is great to be recognized for this hard work." This is Menso's third Fleur-de-lis in her career at St. Catherine and first this season.

Jordyn Wentzel | So., Swim & Dive | Sport

In my individual races one of the most important things to me is helping the team achieve our team goals that we talked about at the beginning of the season. The team overall had some really great swims this past weekend and this motivates me to try and swim my best and keep the energy levels up. I'm so honored to be receiving the fleur-de-lis following my performances. The team and coaching staff this year has been so encouraging of each other and I'm looking forward to mid-season in a few weeks." Her strong performance this weekend also earned her the honor of MIAC Athlete of the Week for the third time this season. In her Wildcat swimming career, Wenzel has earned a total of five Fleur-de-lis awards with this being her first this season.
