Tennis finishes fall competition with successful weekend at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. - Fall competition wrapped up for the St. Catherine University tennis team this weekend with the team having an overall successful two days at Gustavus. The majority of the Wildcats were competing in the Gustavus Fall Invite made up of a field of Division III women's programs from across the Midwest. Juniors Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn.) and Alisha Wiedmeier (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens) represented the Wildcats for the second year in a row at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Midwest Regional Championship hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

Dorr went 1-1 in singles play winning her first match Friday against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent Natalie Pieterick 6-0, 6-2. Dorr advanced to the second round to face ranked opponent Natalie Wijesinghe from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire coming up short in the match to fall 6-0, 6-2. After taking down Dorr, Wijesinghe continued to advance through her bracket falling to Gustavus in the final. For Wiedmeier, things went very well dropping her first match to be placed in the back draw and advancing through to make it to the semifinal match. Due to time constraints during the tournament, the back draw semifinal match for singles play was not played. Wiedmeiers dropped her first match to Devon Bourget 7-6(4), 6-4 placing her self in the consolation bracket to take down Rottinghaus from Wartburg and Stewart from Central (ILL.).

In doubles play, Dorr and Wiedmeier dropped their first match to Concordia Wisconsin 8-5 and getting into the back draw for the remainder of the tournament. Things improved from there taking down Carthage 8-6, UW-Lacrosse 8-6 and ultimately falling to St. Thomas 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

In the Gustavus Fall Invite, first-year Reilee Schepper (Princeton, Minn.) had a notable performance in her first Gustavus Fall Invite, dropping her first match but then winning her consolation bracket flight. Sophomore Ella Graham (Madison, S.D.) also had a fantastic two day tournament winning her first two matches in her flight in the main bracket but falling in the final match to Gustavus. In singles, senior Ruth Rike (Pine City, Minn.) was 1-1, junior Maddy Knoll (Waseca, Minn.) was 2-1  and Kylee Funk (Foley, Minn.) was 2-2. In doubles, Shepper and Funk were 1-1 and Knoll and Graham finished 2-1.
