Opening day at UW-River Falls Invite results in thrilling win over tournament hosts 3-1

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -  The St. Catherine University Wildcat volleyball team opened tournament play with a 3-1 win over University of Wisconsin-River Falls (25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23). The now 5-2 Wildcats are set to play two additional matches tomorrow in the UW-River Falls Invite.

St. Kate's was quick to take the first set over the Falcons 25-18 as junior Larissa Kisch (Oakdale, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) was key at the service line throughout the match with 4 aces.  At the net, senior Emily Carman (Maple Grove, Minn. / Osseo) had 8 kills and 3 blocks. Starting first-year libero Grace Amacher (Faribault, Minn.) continues to show her talents coming up with 34 digs in the match. Setters Brooke Beuning (New London, Minn. / New London Spicer)  and Meagan Scwarzrock (Hutchinson, Minn.) had 17 assists a piece.

UW-River Falls stepped up their speed a bit more in the second set but their efforts weren't enough to overpower St. Kate's.The Falcons pressured the Wildcats near the end of the set but ultimately, St. Kate's was able to power through taking the set 25-23. In the third set, the Falcons continued to rally up the score going back and fourth with the Wildcats for the lead and eventually taking the set from St. Kate's 24-26.

Things started slow after dropping the third set for St. Catherine when entering the fourth set granting the Falcons the early lead. After the Wildcats rallied back to take a 5 point lead at 15-10, UW-River Falls fought back getting the score to a 17-17 tie and again at 19-19 before taking the lead over St. Kate's 21-19. The Wildcats were not ready to give up though rallying back at 21-21 and taking the set 25-23
