ST. PAUL, MINN. – The time has finally come.
After nearly four full weeks of weather watching, two winter storms, more "home" dome games than anyone cares to admit, and a slew of games on the road, the St. Catherine University softball team is finally coming home. The Wildcats will play their first true home games of the season, as they host Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) rival the University of St. Thomas at 1 and 3 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
It will be a momentous occasion for St. Kate's, as the team will officially unveil the new renovations to the softball field and honor its seven seniors:
Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo),
Bethany Del Real (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marshall),
Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson), Maggie Germscheid (Mahtomedi, Minn. / Mahtomedi),
Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson),
Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) and
Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson). In four seasons, this recruiting class has compiled an overall record of 121-45, making them the winningest class in program history. They led St. Kate's to its first ever MIAC Playoff Title and NCAA Championship Series appearance in 2017, and made back-to-back appearances in both the conference and NCAA tournaments in 2016 and 2017.
A small ceremony will be held to honor the seniors before the first game of the doubleheader, which is slated to begin at roughly 1 p.m.
Fans who cannot attend Saturday's home opener in person are invited to follow along online via
live stats. Score updates will also be made on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats). The Wildcats will also take on Hamline University at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday at Hamline.
Live stats and
live video will be available for Sunday's contest.
Here is a special "senior" edition of the five things to know before this weekend's big MIAC doubleheader:
18/12 – One of the two longest-win streaks in the MIAC will come to an end on Saturday. Since losing to Bethel on April 5, the Tommies have won 18-straight games, all against conference opponents and officially clinched their spot as either the No. 1 or 2 seed in the MIAC Tournament next weekend. Coincidentally, the Wildcats last lost on April 12, also to the Bethel Royals, and have not lost since, going on a 12-game win streak against conference opponents.
16 – The St. Kate's senior class of 2018 will go down as one of the most decorated classes in program history. Between the seven of them, these Wildcats have broken 16 school records, both on the hitting and pitching side of things. They've also garnered six All-MIAC and Academic All-Conference honors, nine NFCA All-Scholar team accolades, and been named to three NFCA All-Region teams. Additionally, these seniors have earned All-America and CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition, been named the MIAC Rookie-of-the-Year, MIAC Elite 22 Award winner and earned the National Statistic Award for leading the NCAA in a single statistical category during the season.
536 – With her eight strikeout performance on Thursday, senior ace
Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) moved up to sixth all-time in the history of the MIAC in career strikeouts. The senior, who currently holds school records in single-season wins, single-season ERA, single-season shutouts, single-season strikeouts, career games pitched, career wins, career ERA and career strikeouts, will arguably go down as the best pitcher in program history. Fellow senior
Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) will also have a permanent place in the school record books, as she ranks fifth all-time in career ERA (3.58), sixth in games pitched (58) and ninth in career wins (11).
100 – A slew of St. Kate's softball players reached the 100 milestone in multiple categories this season, including senior shortstop
Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson). After recording her 100
th hit last season, Macziewski tallied her 100
th career run and 100
th career RBI this season, making her the first player in program history to eclipse the 100-100-100 mark. Fellow senior
Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) will likely be the second, as she currently has 147 career hits, a school-record 111 career RBI and 95 career runs.
.370 – Senior second baseman
Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) is currently hitting .370 in MIAC play, which ranks second behind Macziewski. The senior hit the game-tying home run in the Wildcats come-from-behind win against St. Olaf College on Thursday and recorded her 100
th career hit in St. Kate's 6-1 win over Saint Mary's earlier this season. More impressively, Woebke became the first player in program history to earn the National Statistic Award for leading the nation in sacrifice hits (31) in 2017.
