Busy weekend ahead for softball

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University softball team has made the best of the current weather situation, especially in terms of "home" field. The Wildcats have played all three of their "home" games at the Augsburg University Dome, where they just picked up their second consecutive sweep in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Thursday with 5-1 and 12-5 wins over the Auggies.

This weekend, St. Kate's opens a crucial stretch of conference play, where the team will play three MIAC doubleheaders in three days. The Wildcats open their weekend with a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader against Concordia College on Saturday, which will take place at the University of St. Thomas, before playing Saint Mary's at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday in Winona, Minnesota. The team will end their back-to-back-to-back days of doubleheaders on Monday in St. Peter when it takes on Gustavus Adolphus College at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Live stats will be available via St. Kate's on Saturday and Sunday, and links will be available for Monday's doubleheader in the upcoming days. Score updates can be found on the Wildcats official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats). Fans are encouraged to check the twitter feed in the event of technical difficulties.

Here are the five things to know before this weekend's MIAC action:

11-1 – St. Kate's senior class of Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson), Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo), Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo), Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson), and Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) have an 11-1 career record versus Concordia and Saint Mary's. Last season, the Wildcats earned sweeps of both teams, as they scored a combined 49 runs against the two teams. St. Kate's swept the Cardinals 7-0 and 8-0 in its MIAC opener last year and defeated Concordia 16-1 and 18-1 in Moorhead, Minnesota later in the season.

6 – A six hour bus ride, on a good day, separates the Wildcats Saturday and Sunday opponents, the furthest travel distance between two teams in the MIAC. While St. Kate's is located in the heart of the twin cities, Saint Mary's is located in Winona, Minnesota, a roughly two hour drive south, while Concordia is located in Moorhead, Minnesota, nearly four hours away.

5 – Junior right fielder Trish Sherman (Roseville, Minn. / Roseville) has drawn at least one walk in 5 straight games. Over that stretch, she has a .692 on base percentage with 6 walks and 3 hits, two of which were key RBI doubles in the Wildcats sweep over Augsburg.

8 – The Wildcats gave new meaning to the term doubleheader on Thursday, as the team hit eight doubles over the two games. Seven different players hit a double, including Sherman, who knocked in four of St. Kate's runs over the course of the doubleheader.

.571 – Catcher Sammie Galvez (Gilbert, Ariz. / Williams Field) continued to have a hot bat for the Wildcats, as she hit .571 against Augsburg on Thursday. The junior went 1-3 in game one before going 3-4 in game two with a team-leading four RBI in the game. Galvez also has been one of the top catchers in the MIAC this season. In addition to her offensive prowess, Galvez has committed just one error and amassed 73 putouts this season.
