MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – It's very rare when a sports team can claim it was perfect. The St. Catherine University tennis team has achieved one of those times. The Wildcats were, literally, perfect in Friday's nonconference win over Crown College, as they did not drop a game or set in the 9-0 victory.
St. Kate's was perfect in doubles play, as all three of its teams won by scores of 8-0. There were also several new doubles teams on the courts for the Wildcats Friday evening.
Alisha Wiedmeier (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens) and
Aubrey Eckstrom (St. James, Minn. / St. James) dominated as St. Kate's No. 1 doubles team, while
Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) and
Ella Graham (Madison, S.D. / Madison) were gold at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) and
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) earned a perfect 8-0 win in their first doubles match together at the No. 3 singles spot.
The Wildcats were just as dominate in singles play as they were in doubles, as all six student-athletes won without dropping a game or set. Sporer cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 singles spot, and her teammates quickly followed suite. Graham, Obert and Eckstrom won by the same scores at the No. 2, 3 and 6 spots respectfully.
Maddy Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and
Ruth Rike (Pine City, Minn. / Pine City) also earned big wins for St. Kate's Friday evening. Like their teammates, Ruth and Knoll earned quick 6-0, 6-0 victories as the Wildcats No. 4 and 5 singles players.
Thanks to the dominant victory, St. Kate's overall record improved to 5-2 and the team still has a 1-2 mark in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. The Wildcats will return to the court Saturday evening when they host St. Olaf College in a big MIAC match. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
