MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The St. Catherine University tennis team has been on a roll as of late. After earning their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the season, the Wildcats cruised to another victory, this time 9-0 over the University of Minnesota-Morris.
St. Kate's was dominant in doubles play, allowing the team to take a 3-0 lead after the opening session. In fact, all three teams managed to win their respective matches without dropping a single game, including the No. 1 doubles team of
Alisha Wiedmeier (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens) and
Aubrey Eckstrom (St. James, Minn. / St. James). The two sophomores dominated on the court, defeating the top Cougar team 8-0. The No. 2 team of
Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) and
Ella Graham (Madison, S.D. / Madison) and No. 3 team of
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) and
Ruth Rike (Pine City, Minn. / Pine City) defeated their opponents identical scores at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Things went just as smoothly for St. Kate's as it did in doubles. Graham,
Maddy Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and Eckstrom did not drop a set en route to 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles spots, helping St. Kate's take a 6-0 lead midway through the dual.
Dorr, Wiedmeier and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) played the most exciting matches of the evening. As the team's No. 1 singles player, Dorr did not drop a game in the opening set, cruising to a 6-0 win. She did lose one game in the second, but still managed to score a 6-0, 6-1 victory straight set victory.
Wiedmier also won her opening set 6-0 as the No. 2 singles player before defeating her opponent 6-2 in the second set for a 6-0, 6-2 victory. At the No. 3 singles spot, Sporer won 6-0, 6-1.
Thanks to the dominating win, the Wildcats overall record improves to 4-1 and they have a 1-1 mark in MIAC play. St. Kate's will return to the court on Saturday, March 3 when it travels to Lakeville, Minnesota to take on Carleton College at 2:30 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness.
