ST. PAUL, MINN. – They say there's no rivalry quite like the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Clearly, those experts have never been to a basketball game between the St. Catherine University Wildcats and the University of St. Thomas Tommies. The bitter Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) rivals played another intense game Saturday afternoon, with nationally ranked St. Thomas coming out on top 87-61.
Despite the final score, Saturday's game between the Wildcats and Tommies was one of the most intense of the season. St. Kate's managed to hang with St. Thomas through the first quarter, as the team only trailed 24-16 after the first 10 minutes of play. However, as the first wore on, the Wildcats had no answer for the Tommies sharp shooting. St. Thomas shot 55% from the floor, including 60% from three point range, in the first half, and the visitors took a 51-33 lead into the half.
The Wildcats still battled in the second half of play, as their offense was primarily led by Jackie Radford (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) and Danica Cambrice (Minneapolis, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran). The two sophomores both scored nine points in the opening half to lead St. Kate's offense and ended the game in double-digits for the Wildcats. Sadly, their huge offensive games alone weren't enough to catch the Tommies, who went on to score 36 second half points when compared to St. Kate's 28, winning the game by a final score of 87-61.
The Wildcats had one of their best shooting games of the season, as they shot 44% from the floor and 40% from three-point range. Radford was the team's leading scorer in the loss with a career-high 19 points, while Cambrice added 17. Both sophomores led the team with six rebounds apiece.
With the loss St. Kate's overall record falls to 8-12, and the team has a 5-9 mark in MIAC play. The Wildcats will return to the court on Wednesday, when they host St. Olaf College at 7 p.m. in the Butler Center Gym.
