Goals from four different players lead Wildcats to 4-1 win over Bennies

Campbell, T. Johnson, Witte and Talkachova picked up goals in conference win

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The St. Catherine University Wildcat soccer team picked up a conference win on the road against the College of Saint Benedict Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats advance their record to 6-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

St. Kate's tallied goals from four different Wildcats in the 4-1 game led by senior defender Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck St. Mary's) picked up one goal and one assist. The Wildcats three game win streak is largely credited to Talkachova's performance lately adding either a goal or an assist in each of those wins.

Head coach Jesse Campos said after the game he is "very proud of how the team played today despite the conditions. Each of the goals scored were great goals, including the one from Saint Ben's." The Bennies were on the board first after a penalty kick leading to a goal and held the lead for 14 minutes.

First-year forward Sofia Campbell (St. Paul, Minn. / Nova Classical Academy) scored unassisted on a free kick following a Bennie foul to tie the game at 1-1 just before the end of the 1st half. Campbell adds to Talkachova's hot streak also recording at least a goal or an assist in each of the Wildcat's last three wins.

After the half, first-year midfielder Taylor Johnson (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park) netted her first goal of the season from Talkachova's corner to get the Wildcats the lead in the 58th minute. Minutes later, forward Lauren Witte added her eighth goal on the season unassisted for the 3-1 lead. The final goal from the Wildcats came in the 68th minute when Talkachova wrapped one in off a corner kick.

The Wildcats overpowered the Bennies throughout the game with 25 shots and 14 on goal to their 8 shots and 4 shots on goal.

St. Kate's is on the road again Saturday as they travel north on Cretin Ave. to take on the Tommies from the University of St. Thomas at 1 p.m. The Wildcats return to campus on Tuesday, October 16 when Viterbo (NAIA) comes to town for a 4 p.m. game.
