Another Wildcat double overtime results in 3-2 win over Concordia

ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the second game in a row, the St. Catherine University Wildcat soccer team won 3-2 in double overtime. The Wildcats (5-2-2, 3-1-2 MIAC) defeated the Concordia College - Moorhead Cobbers (4-5-3, 1-3-2 MIAC) after playing 106 minutes of soccer with a goal from senior midfielder Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North) from midfielder Taylor Johnson's (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park) corner kick. 

On the day dedicated to the American Cancer Society, Hope Lodge and the 2017 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff Championship Team, the Wildcats overpowered the Cobbers through the first half with five shots within the first seven minutes of play. 

In the fourteenth minute sophomore defender Dana Lehtinen (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored on an assist from first-year forward Sofia Campbell (St. Paul, Minn. / Nova Classical Academy) seconds after a corner from senior defender Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck St. Mary's).  

The Wildcats second goal of the game came from the same duo just in reverse order with Campbell getting the goal from Leihtinen in the 21st minute. The Wildcats had 15 shots in the first half finishing it 2-0 over the Cobbers who put up only 5 shots in the 45 minutes. 

After five minutes of play in the second half, the Cobbers picked up their first goal from Karsen Granning unassisted.  The Wildcats continued to overpower the Cobbers with 6 shots to their 3. With just over two minutes to play the Cobbers scored on a wild shot from Klara Beinhorn assisted by Erin Eidness resulting from Kalli Baarstad's corner kick. 

30 seconds remaining T. Johnson gave the Wildcats one last shot to finish it in regulation with a corner kick but the Cobbers keeper Maddy Reed grabbed it before St. Kate's could get a touch on it. 

St. Kate's and Concordia were scoreless in the first overtime with St. Kate's getting the only two shots in the 10 minutes of play. With just 3 minutes and 36 seconds left on the clock, Machovec scored from T. Johnson's corner kick. 

Leading the Wildcats in this afternoon's conference win was Talkachova with 6 shots and 5 shots on goal plus Machovec with 4 shots all on goal. Junior goalkeeper Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn.) faced 8 shots today saving 6. 

The Wildcats travel to St. Joseph, Minnesota Tuesday, October 9 for a 4 p.m. game against conference opponent College of Saint Benedict. The Bennies are one point behind the Wildcats in the MIAC standings and currently 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC.
