ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's no secret that the St. Catherine University basketball team plays its best basketball against the top teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). On Saturday, that theory will be put to the test, as the Wildcats are set to take on the University of St. Thomas, the No. 3 team in the nation.
The Wildcats and Tommies provided two of the most thrilling games in the conference last season and St. Kate's hopes that trend continues Saturday afternoon. Last year, the Wildcats went 1-1 in two games against St. Thomas, upsetting the then No. 9 ranked Tommies 67-63 in December at home before falling on the road by a score of 72-67.
Saturday's game will take place at St. Thomas' Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex. For those who can't watch the game in person,
live stats and
video will be available and score updates will be made on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).4
Here are the five things to know before Saturday's 3 p.m. tip off between the Tommies and Wildcats:
2 – On Wednesday, senior guard
LaShay Holt broke two long-standing school records in the first quarter of St. Kate's 82-48 win over Macalester. The senior broke Laura Kalbfell's seven year school record for career points at 3:38 in the first quarter and later broke Jeanna Spannring's 17-year-old school record for career rebounds. To this point, Holt as scored 1407 points during her career with the Wildcats and pulled in 771 rebounds.
4 – Holt wasn't the only St. Kate's student-athlete on fire in Wednesday night's victory. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, including senior
Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn. / Dawson-Boyd) who scored a career-high and team leading 20 points in the victory. Teammate
Kennedy Jennings (Grimes, Iowa / Dallas Center-Grimes) scored 14 points while
Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) and
Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn./ Hopkins) each scored 11.
134 - St. Kate's scored 134 points in two games against St. Thomas last season, the second-highest point total of any team in the MIAC. This season, the Wildcats are averaging 70 points per game, but the Tommies only allow their opponents to score an average of 52 points per game.
20 – St. Thomas senior center Kaitlin Langer currently averaged 20.0 points per game, the highest average in the MIAC. Langer also currently leads the conference in points (380), points vs. MIAC opponents (256) and points per game vs. MIAC opponents (19.7). She ranks third in the conference in shooting (57%) as well.
7 – St. Kate's current record of 7-6 in MIAC play is the team's best conference record through this point of the season in multiple years. On Saturday, the Wildcats will try to hand the Tommies not only their first conference loss of the season, but their first overall loss. St. Thomas is currently 19-0 with a 13-0 mark in MIAC play.
