Tennis nets two wins with sweeps of Martin Luther and Concordia

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – After a somewhat disappointing start to the 2017 season, the St. Catherine University tennis team was looking to get two big wins Saturday afternoon, including its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the season. The Wildcat didn't just win on Saturday though. The team swept both Martin Luther College and Concordia College to improve to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in MIAC play.

St. Kate's was nearly perfect in Saturday's matches, as the team did not drop a set in either singles or doubles play against both opponents. In the opening match against Martin Luther, the Wildcats rolled to a 9-0 win over the Knights, thanks to superb play from everyone on the court. At the No. 1 doubles spot, Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) cruised to an 8-3 victory over Martin Luther's No. 1 team of Anna Hemmelman and Rachel Riediger. That win set the tone for the rest of doubles play, Aubrey Eckstrom (St. James, Minn. / St. James) and Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) earned an 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, while Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) and Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) earned an 8-0 victory as the Wildcats No. 3 doubles team.

St. Kate's was just as strong in singles play as it was in doubles, as Knoll, Dorr, Duda, and Sporer all earned straight-set victories over their respective opponents. Alisha Wiedmeier opened her night with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 2 singles spot, while Kailey Maroney (Montevideo, Minn. / Montevideo) was flawless in her 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot.

While the Wildcats managed to get their first win of the season against the Knights, they also netted their first MIAC win of the season in the second match against Concordia. After an hour and a half break, St. Kate's retook the court with the same enthusiasm as it did in the opening dual match. Again, the Wildcats did not drop a single match against the Cobbers, going on to win decisively 9-0.

Due to numbers, Concordia defaulted two matches at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots, which allowed St. Kate's to take a 2-0 early lead. Wiedmeier and Sporer made it 3-0 with a quick 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot while Knoll and Dorr took care of business with an 8-2 win as the No. 1 doubles team.

Again, the Wildcats went undefeated in singles play and earned six points without dropping a single set. Both Knoll and Sporer earned 6-0, 6-0 straight set victories, while Duda won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles spot. Maroney also won a decisive match 6-1, 6-2, while Dorr won the final match of the evening with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lisa Nuemann.

Thanks to the two wins on Saturday, St. Kate's overall record improved to 2-2 and the team's opens the MIAC season with a 1-0 record. The Wildcats will return to the court next weekend when they host the University of St. Thomas at 6:30 p.m. at Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
