Basketball returns to MIAC play against Carleton

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University basketball team found quite a bit of success on the court during December. The team posted a 5-1 record during the final month of 2016, with several last-second victories over both conference and nonconference opponents.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats look to keep the good times rolling as they host Carleton College at 7 p.m. in the Butler Center Gymnasium. It will be St. Kate's first home game since December 10, when the team hosted Augsburg College and earned a dramatic 93-91 overtime victory. However, December 10 wasn't just the last time the Wildcats played at home. It is also the last time the team played an opponent from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

Fans who can't make it to the Butler Center can tune into the game via live stats and video. Score updates will also be made on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before St. Kate's and Carleton tip off at 7 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota:

24 – Exactly twenty-four days have passed since the Wildcats last played a MIAC opponent. In that time, St. Kate's basketball team has won two games against nonconference opponents in dramatic fashion, including last Friday's 61-58 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior and a 61-59 victory over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on December 14.

3 – The Wildcats are riding a three-game win streak entering Wednesday night's game against the Knights, the team's longest win streak of the season. However, how St. Kate's won its last three games might be more impressive than the streak itself. The Wildcats have won their last three games by three-points or less, with two of those three wins coming against top-teams in other conferences. The team has also needed two buzzer-beaters and key free throw shooting to come away with the victories. Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) hit an overtime buzzer beater in St. Kate's 93-91 win over Augsburg, while Kennedy Jennings (Grimes, Iowa / Dallas Center-Grimes) hit the game-winners against both UW-River Falls and UW-Superior.

20 – Jennings tallied a career high 20 points against the Yellow Jackets last Friday, making her the fifth Wildcat to record a new career-high in points this season. Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn. / Dawson-Boyd), Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins), Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) and Danica Cambrice (St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) have all set a new career-high in points since the start of the 2016-17 season.

55.2 – Lee currently leads the MIAC in three-point shooting percentage (55.2) and is fourth in overall field-goal percentage (59.5). Since the beginning of the season, the senior forward has been ranked in the top-5 in both categories and leads the team in both as well.

1 – Senior guard LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn. / Humboldt) is one steal away from tying St. Kate's program record for career steals. Former Wildcat guard Natalie Lyzhoft set the record with 210 steals from 2001-2005.
