Softball sweeps Concordia to move up MIAC rankings

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University softball team continued to do the right things in their Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Concordia-Moorhead College. Behind a potent offense, stingy defense, and stellar pitching, the Wildcats swept the Cobbers for the second straight season, beating them 10-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two.

St. Kate's offense headlined the first game, as the team compiled 10 runs and 15 hits in just six innings against Concordia's Kali Covert. In fact, the Wildcats put at least one runner in scoring position in every innings but the second.

St. Kate's had a chance to score in the first inning. With designated player Brittney Frenette (Columbia Heights, Minn. / Irondale) and third baseman Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) on first and second, centerfielder Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn. / Anoka) hit a line drive single to the right fielder. Frenette seemed to have scored the first run of the ball game but was called out at home on the rally throw from right field.

The Wildcats were quiet in the second but erupted for seven runs in the third inning. Donielle Kurvers (Monticello, Minn. / Monticello) reached first after getting hit by a pitch and scored from first on a single from Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North). St. Kate's hit three consecutive singles scoring Rohr, Macziewski, and Lindenfelser.
The Wildcats weren't satisfied with four runs in the third, though. They proceeded to score three more, as Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo), Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson), Kurvers, and Rohr all recorded RBI hits.

Concordia cut St. Kate's lead to five after a two run inning of the own in the top of the fourth. Mackenzie McCloud hit a leadoff single, then first baseman Sydney Roberts followed up with a home run over the center field fence. That was the last threat the Cobbers would put together against the Wildcats, who went on to score three unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) earned her twelfth win of the season, giving up just two runs on three hits while striking out five Cobber batters.

Game two was the opposite of game one, due in large part to spectacular pitching by both St. Kate's and Concordia. Lindenfelser earned the nod in game two and gave up the Cobbers only hit of the ball game in the top of the first. After giving up a leadoff single to Madison Little, Lindenfelser sent the next three batters down in order and stifled Concordia's only legitimate threat in the entire game.

Cobber ace Abigail Haraldson managed to stifle the Wildcat offense through the first four innings of play. She allowed just three St. Kate's hitters to reach base in those first four innings. However, St. Kate's was finally able to break through in the fifth inning. Anna Hinderaker (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) hit a leadoff single then advanced to second on Woebke's sacrifice bunt, giving the Wildcats their first real chance to score since the third inning.

The Cobbers walked Rohr, putting runners on first and third with two outs. Head coach Colleen Powers pinch hit Jenna George (Ellsworth, Wis. / Ellsworth) for Frenette, and George delivered. She hit a slow roller to the second baseman, and Hinderaker turned on the jets to score from second base.

That one run was all Lindenfelser and St. Kate's needed, as they went on to win game two 1-0. Lindenfelser struck out a season high 13 batters in her seventh complete game of the season.

With the sweep, the Wildcats improved their overall record to 25-4 and moved to second place in the MIAC standings with a 12-4 conference record. St. Kate's next two games will be against nonconference opponents. They will travel to Wisconsin to take on the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire on Sunday, then will travel to play St. Scholastica on Tuesday.
