CLERMONT, FLA. – The St. Catherine University softball team is already off to its best start in program history, with an undefeated 8-0 record. After Tuesday morning's games, the Wildcats look like they might never loose. St. Kate's improved to 10-0 on the season after beating Greenville College 8-3 and Salve Regina 9-2 at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
St. Kate's offense picked up right where it left off against Bowdoin Monday night, scoring two quick runs in the top of the first and two more in the second to take a 4-0 lead over Greenville.
Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North),
Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn. / Anoka), and
Brittney Frenette (Columbia Heights, Minn. / Irondale) scored for the Wildcats in the first two innings thanks to two sacrifice bunts by
Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) and hits by
Sammie Galvez (Gilbert, Ariz. / Williams Field) and
Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo).
St. Kate's added to their lead in the top of the fifth as designated hitter
Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) hit a one out double to start the offense that inning.
Megan Miller (Green Isle, Minn. / Norwood Young America) went in to run for Flugstad, taking third on a pass ball and scoring on a
Donielle Kurvers (Monticello, Minn. / Monticello) single. The Wildcats added three more runs in the seventh to win the ball game 8-3.
Starter Lindenfelser kept the Panthers bats quiet throughout the game. The sophomore struck out 12 Greenville batters while giving up just three runs on eight hits for her third win of the 2016 season.
The Wildcats faced a formidable opponent in game two in the Salve Regina who lost 6-5 to three time-defending national champion Tufts University 6-5 in extra innings before facing St. Kate's. With that in mind, the Wildcats didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard first. Rohr led off in the top of the first with a single, stole second, and scored when cleanup hitter Galvez hit a two run blast to left center for her second homerun in as many days.
Both St. Kate's and Salve Regina were unable to score in the second inning, and the Seahawks managed to tie the game at two in the top of the third. Salve Regina's Francesca Galeazzi and Lindsey Florent forced back to back walks, then stole second and third to put runners in scoring position. Galeazzi scored on a wild pitch by starter
Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) and Florent scored on a single by Elizabeth Lombardo.
Berquam pitched her way out of the third, and the Wildcats offense went to work. St. Kate's scored four runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a three-run home run by
Jenna George (Ellsworth, Wis. / Ellsworth), the first home run of her collegiate career.
Anna Hinderaker (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) recorded an RBI early in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Galvez from third, giving the Wildcats a 6-2 lead through the first three innings.
St. Kate's added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 9-2. Sis ignited the offensive spark with a leadoff single. Two batters later, she advanced to third on Hinderaker's one double. Both Sis and Hinderaker scored on Kurvers single up the middle while George, who had been walked, advanced to second. Rohr's single to the right side loaded the bases, and Woebke hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring George from third.
The Wildcats recorded 12 hits in yet another strong offensive showing against Salve Regina. Kurvers was perfect at the plate against the Seahawks, going 3-3 with 2 RBI. Rohr, Sis, Glavez, Hinderaker, and George continued to look impressive at the plate as they went a combined 9 for 16 and scored eight of the Wildcats nine runs.
Flugstad earned her fifth win of the season after coming in to relieve Berquam at the start of the fourth inning. In four innings of work, the sophomore gave up just four hits while striking out eight and walking none. Berquam gave up two runs, struck out two and walked four in the first three innings of work.
With the two wins on Tuesday, St. Kate's improves to 10-0 on the year for the first time in program history. The Wildcats ten straight wins in the longest win streak for the program since the start of last season. St. Kate's lost their opening game to UW-Steven's Point, then won ten straight games at the start of last season. The Wildcats hope to extend that win streak on Thursday when the face Fontbonne University at 9 a.m. EST and Elmhurst College at 11 a.m. EST. Live stats and audio will be available for the game against Fontbonne.
