Tennis looks to stay undefeated with two matches this weekend

ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's been a great start to the season for the St. Catherine University tennis team. The Wildcats are off to a 3-0 start with wins over North Central, Northwestern, and Concordia-Moorhead to kick off the season. This weekend, St. Kate's has a busy weekend with matches against Martin Luther College on Friday and Carleton College on Sunday.

The Wildcats will host Martin Luther at the U of M Baseline Friday night at 5:30 p.m. before facing Carleton on Sunday at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville. Here are the important numbers to know before both matches begin:

0 – Number of losses St. Kate's has suffered this season. The Wildcats are a perfect 3-0 heading into the weekend and already have one win in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. St. Kate's will play their second MIAC opponent on Sunday in their match against Carleton.

23 – Number of total wins the Wildcats have accumulated this season. In their first three matches of the year, St. Kate's beat their opponents by overall scores of 9-0, 5-4, and 9-0 respectively, defeating their opponents by an overall score of 23-4.

1st – This will be the first time St. Kate's and Martin Luther face each other on the tennis courts, according to the available records. The Wildcats and Knights have never faced each other coming into Friday night; however, both St. Kate's and Martin Luther have faced opponents from the other's respective conference. So far this season, Martin Luther has faced three MIAC opponents, including Macaester, Saint Benedict, and Saint Mary's.

2 – Number of opponents St. the Wildcats have faced this season from the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). St. Kate's faced and defeated North Central and Northwestern earlier this season,  and hope to get their third victory over a UMAC opponent Friday evening.  

3 – Number of tiebreakers needed to determine winners in last year's match against Macalester. Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) needed two sets and a tiebreaker to beat the Knights No. 2 singles opponent, while Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D. / Mitchell) lost a heartbreaker to Carleton's No. 3 singles player in a tiebreaker.
