SUPERIOR, Wis.---So far in 2016, the St. Catherine University hockey team has looked like a new program after scoring a win and a tie already this week. In a rematch with the University of Wisconsin-Superior Saturday, the Wildcats hoped to remain unbeaten. Unfortunately, the Wildcats weren't able to get anything going in game two of the match up and suffered a 2-0 setback in Superior, Wisconsin.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time putting the pressure on the Wildcats Saturday holiding a 20-10 advantage in shots through the first period. Despite holiding the Yellow Jakets off in the first period, the Wildcats couldn't do the same in the second as Saige Patrick and Maggie Cragg scored back-to-back goals in just over two minutes before the half way mark of the game.
The Wildcats managed just three shots on goal in the third period which allowed the Yellow Jackets' goalie Sky Brown to earn a 23-save shutout, while
Kristen Pechacek (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) put her best foot forward to keep the Wildcats in the game making a career-high 46 saves.
Not only were the Wildcats outshot 48-23, they also failed to capitalize on four power play opportunities.
Randi Fabsits (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) led the Wildcats offensively with five shots on goal, while
Sara Brakke (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) had three
With the lose, the Wildcats move to 1-8-3 on the season. They will face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Drake Arena for a final non-conference test before reopening Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play next weekend with a two-game series against perennial powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus College.
