Coming off a solid non-conference win Saturday at Elmhurst College, the St. Catherine University soccer team had good momentum heading back into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play Wednesday against Macalester College. Despite playing fairly even with the Scots in the first half, the Wildcats couldn't hold off their opponent in the second half falling 2-0 on the road in St. Paul.
The first half opened up with Macalester taking a slight 7-4 advantage in shots, but both teams managed just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, though, the Wildcats couldn't generate many opportunities recording just one shot as opposed to the Scots' six shots.
After playing to a scoreless first half, the Scots wasted no time to get on the board in the second half as Kara Komoto beat Wildcat keeper
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) just 2:30 in on a long pass from Lydia Chodosh.
The Wildcats held off the Scots for most of the remainging half until the Scots upped their lead to 2-0 with three seconds left on the clock when Rae Hohle floated a goal just above Mendez from 12 yards out.
Mendez recorded three saves in goal for the Wildcats.
Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn./Stillwater) and
Iryna Talkachova (Shoreview, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's School) each recorded one shot on goal, while
Emily Hutchins-Peterson (Champlin, Minn./Osseo),
Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and
Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) each tallied a shot a piece.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-2 in the MIAC. They are scheduled to take on perennial powerhouse College of Saint Benedict Saturday in front of a home crowd at 1 p.m. in St. Paul.
