It's been a week since the St. Catherine University soccer team last competed and scored an exciting 4-2 win over Hamline University on home turf. The Wildcats hit the road for a non-conference match up against Elmhurst College and scored a 2-1 victory after a late-game comeback Saturday in Elmhurst, Illinois.
"This was a huge win for our program," said Head Coach
Chris Citowicki. "To be on the road against a team of that quality and comeback from one goal down in great. It took us awhileto get started but the second hald was excellent once we started playing to our identity. I'm proud of everyone on this team."
The entire game was nearly identical for both teams with 11 shots each and four on goal with back-and-forth play highlighting a scoreless first half.
The second half was a different story, though, as the Blue Jays wasted no time getting on the board. In the 56th minute, Kat Waugh beat a defender on a pass from Brittany Reinhart before scoring to the right of
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) to break the scoreless tie giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats weren't about to give up yet and began to mount a comeback in the 72nd minute when
Allie Boucher (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) evened the score a 1-1 after she beat the Blue Jays' keeper Melinda Vickers on a curling free kick from 20 yards out.
Then, in the 83rd minute, the Wildcats were able to pull ahead for good when
Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) scored off an
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) corner kick.
Mendez earned her fourth win of the season in goal with a three-save effort. Leyva led the offensive attack with three shots and one on goal, while Kelly Moliter had two shots.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-2-1 overall on the season. They return to conference action Wednesday traveling less than two miles to play Macalester College under the lights at 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
