After losing a heartbreaking Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest in the final seconds of overtime Saturday, the St. Catherine University soccer team was searching for a much-needed victory in non-conference competition against Central College to end a three-game losing streak. Thanks dominating team performance, the Wildcats managed to get back in the win column with a 1-0 decision over the Dutch Tuesday in Pella, Iowa.
The Wildcats got our to a fast starts as they opened up the first 10 minutes of with a pair of shots from sophomore
Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn./Stillwater) including one one goal and one that missed just left.
Less than three minutes later, the Wildcats received a golden opportunity that they took full advantage of when
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) took a corner kick that set up a goal from
Julia Zyla (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Trinity School at River Ridge) at 13:02. This was Zyla's first goal of the season and second of her two-year collegiate career with the Wildcats.
Following the goal, the Wildcats continued as they have all season to play solid defense in front of goalie
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) who recorded two saves for her second individual shutout of the season. Her solid performance helped the Wildcats pick up their second win of the season to improve to 2-4-1 on the season.
The Wildcats controlled play for a majority of the game outshooting a physical Dutch squad 9-5 and edging them 4-2 in corner kick opportunities. Okerstrom led the Wildcats with four total shots, while Leyva had two including one that made it to Central goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi.
Hannah Brown (Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville South) picked up a shot, as did
Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) who came off the bench to put one of the six shots on goal.
The Wildcats return home for MIAC action this Saturday against Hamline University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in St. Paul.
