ResultsAfter suffering two tough losses to top-ranked national and regional opponents Friday evening, things weren't going to get any easier for the St. Catherine University tennis team as they were slated to face Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Gustavus Adolphus College on the final day of competition at the Midwest Invitational. Unfortunately, a win wasn't in the cards for the Wildcats as they fell 8-1 to Gusties Saturday morning in Madison, Wis.
The Wildcats didn't have enough left in the tank to take on a Gustavus squad that has lost just three matches all season and ranks No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region just behind the Wildcats in the No. 11 spot. The lone Wildcat victory came at the No. 2 doubles spot where
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) and
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn.) took down Annie Mahoney and Sidney Dirks 8-5. The win was the 11th this season for Salo at No. 2 doubles and was Knoll's first of the year at the No. 2 spot. The Wildcats lost at the No. 1 spot, while the Gusties won by default at the No. 3 spot.
Without
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) in the singles line up, the rest of the Wildcat squad were faced with tough competition in different positions than normal. The Wildcats fell in straight sets in the top five spots and dropped the No. 6 singles matchup by default.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 9-5 on the season and will look to get back on the winning track with a victory against a Concordia College squad that hasn't won a match all season. The Wildcats will travel to Moorhead, Minn., to take on the Cobbers next Saturday at 1 p.m.
