Coming off its first loss in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play this season to Carleton College last Sunday, the St. Catherine University tennis team hoped to get on track against a Bethel University squad that has yet to win a conference match this season. Fortunately, the Wildcats were able to take down the Royals 9-0 in straight-set decisions across the board Sunday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
The Wildcats continued to show their dominance in doubles play as they swept the Royals 3-0. At the No. 2 spot,
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) came up with an impressive 8-0 win over Abby Kreklau and Kourtney Jakubic. The Wildcats also recieved 8-4 victories at the No. 1 spot from
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) as well as the No. 3 spot from
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn.) and
Megan Buysse (Redwood Falls, Minn.).
In singles, the Wildcats picked up five straight set victories and a default win at the No. 1 spot. Koval had the top win at the No. 2 position with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kristin Vivian. Ketcho rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Amanda Johnson, while Salo defeated Kreklau at the No. 4 singles spot 6-2, 6-1.
Knoll picked up her first singles win of the season at the No. 5 position as she battled Larissa Voss to a close 6-4, 7-5 win, while Buysse picked up her second victory of the season at No. 6 singles. After dueling Jakubic to a narrow 7-5 win in the first set, she recovered and dominated in the second set with a 6-1 win in the second set to help the Wildcats to their third MIAC win of the season.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in MIAC play. The Wildcats return to action Friday against MIAC foe St. Olaf College for a 8 p.m. match up at Baseline.
