Last season, the St. Catherine University tennis team won its first Minnesota Intercolelgiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regualr season title thanks to a huge 5-4 victory over Carleton College in February. With another victory over the Knights this season, the outlook for another repeat conference championships would look to be in favor of the Wildcats. Unfortunately, the Knights had other plan as they took 5-of-6 singles matchups to hand the Wildcats a 6-3 loss Sunday night at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
After taking doubles 2-1 to open the match, the Wildcats couldn't overcome the No. 29 nationally-ranked Knights in singles play. The loss snapped a 13-match win streak against MIAC opponents in the regular season. The last previous conference loss for the Wildcats was a 5-4 decision to the College of Saint Benedict on April 28, 2012.
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) took down the Knights' top pair of Anne Lomabardi and Joyce yu 8-3 to remain undefeated at MIAC No. 1 doubles this season, while
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) also remained a perfect 3-0 in MIAC matches with a 8-6 win over Mikayla Becich and Grace Davis at No. 2 doubles.
Bravo continued to remain unbeaten in her MIAC singles career as she defeated Carleton's No. 1 player Anne Lombardi. Heading into the match, Lombardi was ranked No. 9 in the Central Region ahead of bravo at No. 10, but Bravo proved to be the top singles player in the league for the second-straight season with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position. Bravo is now 13-0 in conference matches in her second season with the Wildcats.
At No. 4 singles, Salo narrowly lost to Carleton's Molly Hemes in a 10-7 third-set tie breaker after coming back from 6-3 loss in the first set to take the second by the same score of 6-3.
The Wildcats return to action next Sunday against Bethel University for another MIAC matchup. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Baseline.
