After cruising to two 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victories last weekend, the St. Catherine University tennis team looked to stay on the winning track against the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in non-conference play. Despite battling in some close contests, the Wildcats were able to take down the Eagles 8-1 Saturday evening at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Doubles has been the strong suit of the Wildcat attack in recent years, but the Eagles made the Wildcats work for their three victories. At the No. 1 spot, Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) and Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) battled Megan and Kelly Johnson to an 8-6 victory, while Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn.) and Megan Buysse (Redwood Falls, Minn.) took down the No. 3 pair by the same score.

And after going 16-1 together last season in doubles, Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) were paired together for the first time this season and managed to pull off a close 9-7 win at the No. 2 spot over Karen Moe and Tina Matetich.

In singles play, Bravo took down Megan Johnson in the No. 1 spot 6-1 in the second set after working for a big 7-5 win in the first set. Salo cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kelly Johnson at the No. 3 position, while Buysse defeated Amber Gallaway by the same straight-set score from No. 6 singles.

At the No. 5 spot, Knoll managed to pull off a solid 6-2, 6-3 win over Rachel Bostrom. From the No. 4 spot, Lorenzen had her work cut out for her. She rolled to a 6-2 victory over Matetich in the first set and then fell by the same score in the second. Lorenzen finally sealed the win with a 10-6 decision in the third-set tiebreaker.

The Wildcats will return to MIAC action in what should be an exciting rematch from last season with Carleton College. The Knights were picked to finish first in the MIAC in the Preason Coaches' Poll and suffered their only conference loss in the regular season last year to the Wildcats. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
