The St. Catherine University tennis team ventured out of cold Minnesota temperatures to open the 2014 portion of their season in Hawaii's warmer climate. The Wildcats took on two Divsion II PacWest opponents falling 6-0 to BYU-Hawaii in the rain Wednesday and defeating Chaminade University 7-2 Thursday.
The Wildcats opened their Hawaii trip with a tough 6-0 loss to BYU-Hawaii – the 2013 PacWest conference champion and NCAA Division II runner up – that was called after the completion of singles play due to rain. The next day, the 2013 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) champions turned around to defeat Chaminade 7-2 with a perfect 3-0 sweep of doubles.
Top-returning doubles team of
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) defeated Chaminade's best duo of Kimberly Takara and Jan Matsumoto by a narrow margin of 8-6 for the team's first doubles victory of the season.
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) turned in a solid 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot, while
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn.) cruised to a 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Bravo cruised to to a 6-0 victory in the first set over Melanie Schumilas and then pulled off a 7-5 win in the second for her first victory of the season at No. 1 singles. At No. 4 singles, Salo battled Roni Hewett to a third-set tie breaker and won 6-4 for her first singles vitory of the season to seal the win for the Wildcats.
Lorenzen easily moved past Kim Spring 6-1,6-0 at the No. 5 spot, while Knoll picked up her first collegiate singles win with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Isel Barba at the No. 6 position.
The Wildcats are slated to open conference play on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center. First, the wildcats will face Hamline University at 8 a.m. before facing off against Macalester College at 7 p.m.
