Basketball can't slow down nationally-ranked Tommies in MIAC loss

Box Score After suffering a tough loss to the College of Saint Benedict Wednesday to open the second-half of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season, the road to another win wasn't going to get any easier as the St. Catherine University basketball team faced a nationally-ranked University of St. Thomas squad. The Wildcats couldn't find a way to slow down the high-powered Tommie offense in suffering a 61-32 loss Saturday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul. 

The Tommies shot 50 percent from the field with three players in double-digits and out rebounded the Wildcats 36-22. The Wildcats couldn't get going offensively either as they shot just 29.5 percent as a team. St. Thomas opened the game with a 14-0 run and never looked back en route to their 11th MIAC victory of the season. 

The Wildcats were led again offensively by LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.) who had a team-high 11 points and three rebounds. She also had a game and career-high five steals and also added an assist. Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was 2-for-5 from 3-point range for six points and two rebounds, while Kristin Lee (Dawson, Minn.) added five points and three rebounds. 

Sarah Manning (Page, Ariz.) scored just four points, but was perfect all night including 2-for-2 from the free throw line. She also added the teams only block, an assist and two reboudns. Liz Ellens (Sauk Centre, Minn.) scored two points and had a team-high three assists. 

Maggie Weiers led the Tommies with 17 points, while Taylor Young shot 50 percent from the field for 13 points and Katie Stone scored 11. 

The Wildcats return to action against Hamline University Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Butler Center The game was originally postponed on Jan. 6.
