After an impressive 3-0 start to the 2013 season, the St. Catherine University tennis team would face its toughest test so far against Bethel University in an always-important Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match.
But the Wildcats proved the Royals just couldn't measure up as they took down their MIAC foe in impressive fashion with a 7-2 win to remain undefeated Friday night at the University of Minesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
As they have all season, the Wildcats went a perfect 3-0 in doubles play and dropped just three total games to the Royals.
Michaela Burroughs (Waterloo, Neb.) – who was named the MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week on Monday – and her partner in crime
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) continued to impress as they took down the Royals' Steph Brown and Kristin Vivian 8-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot, while
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Kylie Ketcho (Eden Prairie, Minn.) won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Burroughs remained undefeated at No. 2 as she claimed a balanced 6-2, 6-2 victory over Abby Edin of the Royals.
Bravo and Koval also remained unbeaten in singles play with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Bravo took down Lisa Scheevel 6-1, 6-3, while Koval defeated Brown 6-3, 6-1.
The Wildcats improve to 2-0 in MIAC play with the win and will take on last year's MIAC Champion Carleton College in a tough conference matchup Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Baseline.
