After making the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoffs a year ago, the St. Catherine University tennis team hoped it could pick up where it left off and open the 2013 season in a big way.
The Wildcats were able to do just that as they opened up with 9-0 sweeps of Hamline University and Northwestern College, Saturday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
In their opening MIAC contest against the Pipers, the Wildcats dropped just one game in three doubles wins. The All-MIAC pair of
Michaela Burroughs (Waterloo, Neb.) and
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) pulled in an 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot, while All-MIAC pick
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and newcomer
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) also scored a perfect 8-0 victory at the No. 3 poistion.
Burroughs had an impressive No. 2 singles win as she took down the Pipers' Cassie Rammage in straight sets, while
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Carrissa Wallerich at the No. 1 spot to help the Wildcats open the season with a win.
The Wildcats second match of the day against Northwestern went just as well as the first as the doubles teams again picked up two perfect 8-0 wins. This time it was the No. 1 combo of Bravo and
Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) and the Lorenzen-Salo pair that led the way.
Koval – who was the only Wildcat to earn All-MIAC honors in singles play last season – took down the Eagles' Rachel Bostrom in straight sets at the No. 3 spot to lead the Wildcats in singles play.
Salo was also impressive at the No. 5 spot as she earned 6-3, 6-1 set wins, while
Bridget Ferrell (Apple Valley, Minn.) stepped in at the No. 6 position and defeated Karin Smith 6-2, 6-0.
The Wildcats open the season 2-0 and will return to action next weekend in non-conference play against Minnesota State University-Mankato. The match is scheduled to begin Saturday at 5:30 p.m., at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
